Penalty overlay

How to Play Snake

Also called: The Snake · Three-Putt Snake · Snake bet

Snake is a putting penalty game. The first golfer to 3-putt takes the Snake, and it transfers to every later 3-putter. The golfer holding it at the end of the round owes the agreed penalty.

Best for

Almost any group that wants a tiny, memorable putting side bet.

Handicaps

Not normally used; every golfer is judged on putts taken after reaching the green.

  • Define the putting-green boundary
  • Decide whether 4-putts add a penalty
  • Define team or individual payment

Worked example

How the Scoring Works

Chris 3-putts hole 3 and takes the Snake. Alex 3-putts hole 15, so it transfers to Alex. Nobody else 3-putts; Alex pays the final penalty.

Snake Formula

Final holder pays stake × opponents. Each opponent receives one stake unless the contract charges every 3-putt.

Disputes and Edge Cases

Lock ties, timing, multipliers, handicap use and maximum loss before tee-off. The written round contract controls any house-rule variation.

Mix it carefully

Can Snake Be Played With Other Games?

Snake is independent of the main scoring format and can sit beside nearly any game.

Popular Variations

  • Value grows after every 3-putt

Strategy Without the Spreadsheet

  • A safe lag matters more when you already hold the Snake.
  • Count fringe putts under a pre-agreed rule.
  • Track possession immediately; rebuilding the chain after the round causes arguments.
